The new version of the new Öhlins RXF 34 m.2 is limited to a suspension travel of 120 to 130 millimetres. This has enabled some weight to be saved and the function to be further improved. At 1740 grams, the new Swedish fork is absolutely impressive and weighs around 100 grams less than a Fox 34 with Grip2 cartridge.
Öhlins has also worked on user-friendliness. The new trail fork dispenses with a ramp-up chamber, which always had to be filled first when setting up the fork to adjust the progression. Instead, the progression can now be adjusted using the volume spacers familiar from other manufacturers. There is now only one main chamber, with a self-adjusting negative chamber.
On the damping side, Öhlins has also opted for a simpler cartridge in a one-tube design (OTX), which saves weight. The adjustment options for low-speed rebound and compression as well as high-speed compression plus a firm platform are still on board.
On the trail, the new RXF 34 impresses with its fine response and good absorption capacity, even on fast and big hits. The latter has often been a point of criticism of Öhlins forks, which were high in travel but too firm in many situations. After 20 hours of riding, the fork, which had been working perfectly until then, suddenly broke down and dropped a good four centimetres without losing air in the air chamber. The exact cause could not be determined at the time of going to press.
PLUSSensitive response; functional adjustment options; floating axle, which prevents the casting from warping; low weight
MINUS: Early defect with the fork dropping after 20 hours of driving
