Electronic derailleurs for everyone! With this in mind, Shimano is launching a completely new component series on the market in 2023. The Shimano Cues Di2 is aimed at year-round bike commuters. The highlight: an automatic shifting function! According to the manufacturer, the Shimano Cues is intended to be the basis across many bike categories - but only works in conjunction with the new EP6 e-bike drives and the EP8 Update 801.

In addition to long durability and smooth electronic shifting, the new Cues Di2 groupset promises a new shifting experience according to Shimano. The new Auto Shift and a Free Shift function. With Free Shift, you can shift gears without pedalling for the first time. Auto Shift actually allows automatic shifting.

Automatic shifting is now also possible for derailleur gears, which was previously only available in combination with Shimano Steps drivetrains and Di2 gear hubs. The manufacturer dispels any concerns about being exposed to such technology and promises that riders still have the upper hand and can override the system's automatic shifting processes. The entire Cues Di2 system is powered by the central Shimano Steps battery.

Use case red traffic light

One application scenario for the interaction between Free Shift and Auto Shift is a red light. Normally, you roll up on the bike, brake and then start again in a gear that is too heavy. In this case, Free Shift allows you to freewheel, while Auto Shift takes over at this point and automatically shifts to an easier gear. Sounds practical - our tests will show how it works in rough everyday conditions.
