Fast chargers for e-bike batteries can offer real benefits in everyday cycling. However, e-MTBs often come with slow chargers. Aventon is now launching a fast charger for its range of e-bikes, which is said to remain compact and lightweight whilst still charging around three times faster.

Ever since DJI launched its first e-bike motor with a compact fast charger a good two years ago, fast chargers have been a hot topic of discussion amongst e-bike riders. No wonder: they can replace a spare battery or range extender on rides and offer flexibility in everyday use. In the spring, Bosch announced a fast charger for the Smart System, but it will be some time yet before it becomes available. Now Aventon is also launching a fast charger for its e-bikes.

According to Aventon’s product specifications, it fully charges compatible 800-watt-hour batteries in less than two hours. Using the standard charger, this is said to take six to eight hours. In the brand’s in-house laboratory test, the battery reportedly reached 80 per cent charge after 91 minutes. Depending on the temperature and the battery’s initial charge level, the charging time may vary in practice.

Facts about the Aventon fast charger

  • Price: 259 euros
  • Weight: 1.15 kg
  • Charging power: 510 watts / 12 amps
  • Dimensions: 19 x 8 x 4 cm
  • Two modes: Fast Charging / Normal Charging

The device has a maximum output of 510 watts or 12 amps and weighs 1.15 kilograms. If you want to access the full power output, you need to select the fast-charging mode in the Aventon app. The standard setting is normal charging mode. The fast charger costs 259 euros and is said to have the same dimensions as the classic, significantly slower charger from the American manufacturer.

Who stands to benefit?

All e-bikes available on the German market are expected to be compatible with the new charger. This includes the Current REC, ADV and EXP, as well as the Trava ADV and EXP, and also the recently unveiled Naro are currently on Aventon’s compatibility list. BIKE has the Current EXP tested on the trail and that too Driving the Trava EXP in everyday life. However, most bikes are supplied with the standard charger as standard.
