Bicycle roller trainerSmart trainers have also become an indispensable piece of training equipment for many bikers, especially during the cold and wet months. Proper maintenance of the smart trainer or roller trainer is crucial to prolonging their service life and ensuring training quality.
Regular care can prevent major problems and significantly improve the efficiency of training. We therefore recommend both a small care programme directly after training (cat wash) and a monthly programme.
Daily maintenance is an essential part of smart trainer care. Before every training session, you should check that "the roller" is stable and correctly mounted. Loose or poorly fitted parts can lead to defects.
After training, it is important to remove any sweat from the roller, as this contains salts that can adhere to metal parts. Corrosion and can damage plastic materials. A simple wipe with a damp cloth is sufficient to keep the surface clean, while a dry cloth helps to dry all parts completely and prevent rust formation.
In addition to daily maintenance after training, a monthly deep clean is important. This includes dismantling removable parts such as the wheels or fastening mechanisms (thru axle, quick release). These should be cleaned with warm water and mild soap to remove accumulated dirt.
After cleaning, all parts must be completely dried to prevent corrosion. The lubrication of moving parts, such as the fastening mechanisms or gear wheels and chain, is also crucial.
A lubricant specially developed for training equipment or bicycles for dry environments (Dry Lube, Spray wax) should be used to ensure smooth operation and reduce wear.
The maintenance requirements may vary depending on the type of roller. Smart trainers and direct drive roller trainers require special attention as they often have integrated technologies.
The housing should be cleaned after each use to prevent sweat from damaging the internal components. For roller trainers with an integrated cassette, the bicycle chain should be checked regularly to minimise the build-up of dirt.
It is also advisable to regularly check for software or firmware updates on models with smart functions to ensure the best possible performance.
To extend the service life of the roller trainer even further, you should keep your pain cave, i.e. your training room, clean. One Scooter mat protects the floor from sweat and at the same time reduces vibrations and noise (for the neighbours). A Fan during the training session can reduce the amount of sweat that falls on the trainer and, above all, improve your comfort.
When not in use, roller trainers and especially electronic smart trainers should be stored in a dry place to prevent rust and corrosion on metal and electrical parts. The devices should not be exposed to extreme temperature changes, as this can lead to the formation of moisture and cause the materials to wear out more quickly.
