There was a great deal of interest in Bosch's anti-lock braking system for e-mountain bikes last summer - and the first laps with it on the Eurobike test track were very promising, our in-depth tests are just as positive. The ABS on the front wheel prevents unintentional drifting or even rolling over. For the product launch, Bosch teamed up with the German brake manufacturer Magura: the braking system came from Magura, the ABS technology from Bosch.
At the recent Taipei Cycle Show, Taiwanese component manufacturer Tektro also presented its brakes with Bosch ABS. This makes Tektro the second manufacturer on the market to offer the ABS system for e-bikes. In addition to the Tekto Volans ABS and Dorado ABS brake systems, the high-end MTB ABS system is also available.Brake system TRP Trail EVO ABS available. The ABS brakes are available for e-MTBs, fast e-pedelecs and cargo bikes as well as e-city and trekking bikes, depending on the respective areas of application of the brakes on the e-bike. All e-bike types are supported with specially developed ABS modes (ABS Touring, ABS Allroad, ABS Cargo and ABS Trail).
With Tektro / TRP, we are now working with another renowned brake manufacturer that is particularly concerned about the safety of eBikers. We are very pleased about the cooperation. - Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike Systems
Tektro equips its TRP Trail EVO brakes with a 2.3 millimetre thick brake disc. The decision to use particularly thick brake discs was already proven last year. big disc brake test 2021 paid off. According to the manufacturer, the new heavy-duty disc has eight per cent improved heat resistance and 47 per cent optimised lateral stiffness - ideal for use on E-MTBs, even for heavy riders.
The brake pads of the Trail EVO should also score with the well-known high heat resistance, a shorter braking time and lower noise development. The aluminium brake levers of the TRP brakes enable ergonomic 1 to 3-finger positioning and offer a non-slip surface for a better grip.
According to Kai Liao, who as a Bosch engineer was jointly responsible for the collaboration, the current presentation of the Trektro brake systems with ABS was preceded by a good two and a half years of development and a lot of fine-tuning. In particular, connecting the ABS to the Tektro brakes took a lot of effort (pictured below). The existing brakes had to be adapted, as the ABS required an additional amount of oil in the brake system to enable fully automatic "stutter braking".
The brake discs have also been adapted. In order to realise the ABS function, the system requires information about the wheel speed. The ABS sensor records this via the perforated disc integrated in the brake disc.
The first e-bikes with Bosch eBike ABS and Tektro brake components are expected to be available from summer 2023.
>> Shortly before the announcement of its ABS brakes, Tektro announced in an exclusive sneak preview that it would be releasing a complete mountain bike drivetrain in April.
