The new features of the Garmin bike computers are particularly interesting for us bikers. We have the new Edge 1040 and the Edge 1040 Solar presented in June.
The indoor season is not yet open, but the approaching autumn is already clearly noticeable. Indoor training with a Tacx smart trainer the music can be controlled directly via the Edge bike computer. Prerequisite: Pairing with a compatible smartphone.
New indicators, such as heart rate variability status (HRV status) and acute stress, are introduced to improve the calculation of training status. This provides deeper insights into overall effort and long-term training habits. Garmin introduces a new "Fatigued" status to better assess training. Is it productive, exhausting or even overwhelming? A compatible wearable is required to record the updated training status.
This function is also available for the Garmin smartwatches mentioned.
Already included with smartwatches, the Edge 1040 now also counts the intensity minutes that are taken into account when calculating the fitness age in conjunction with a Garmin wearable.
A compatible e-bike can be paired with an Edge 1040 via ANT+. This allows the e-bike data and assistance levels to be displayed on the Edge. Particularly practical: the remaining range on the planned route is calculated and predicted.
As many software updates happen in the background, improvements or customisations are sometimes missed. The "What's New" overview is designed to make new functions visible by presenting the new features.
The SatIQ feature automatically switches on additional satellite systems (e.g. Galileo) and the second GPS frequency band if they are required for better satellite reception, especially in narrow canyons or city centres with tall buildings. If reception improves, additional reception signals are automatically switched off again. This maximises battery life and achieves optimum positioning accuracy.
Heart rate variability during sleep can now be displayed on the aforementioned smartwatches. This gives Garmin users a better overview of their recovery and general well-being. A daily and 7-day average value in relation to the individual basic value provides insights into your own health, recovery and fitness.
Another new function on Garmin watches is training readiness. It combines the current training load with other health data, such as HRV status, recovery, sleep or stress, and customises the readiness for the next training session.
New direction arrows in the navigation on the map now show you where to go. Never set off in the wrong direction on a circuit again! Equally helpful for routes that cross each other. Thanks to the arrow on the smartwatch, you now know which way to go.
Wearers of the MARQ collection, Fenix 6 series or Enduro 1 will also benefit from the feature update with new functions such as heart rate variability recording, optimised training status or e-bike support.
The feature updates from Garmin are free and available immediately. An automatic update can be updated either via WLAN or on the PC via Garmin Express.
An overview of the total scope of the updates is available here.
