The Tallboy has always been the bike for riders who don't want to compromise. Light enough for real uphill ambitions and large action radii, stable enough for demanding trails. The new version goes one better: 300 g less frame weight, new kinematics, no more carbon trims even in the cheapest model. I'm curious to see whether the reinterpretation of the trail bike will also pay off in terms of price. - Max Fuchs, BIKE test editor
This is the most technically significant innovation and the boldest decision in the entire redesign: the Tallboy has a four-link rear triangle for the first time. Santa Cruz has been using this kinematics on its e-bikes for some time; the Tallboy is the first time it has been used on a classic mountain bike. The deliberately lower anti-rise value and the even lower anti-squat value should give the bike better braking traction, keep bumps away from the rider more effectively in rough terrain and generate better traction when pedalling under chain tension. Practical side effects of the new design: the frame weight is reduced and the seatpost insertion depth is increased.
Until now, the Tallboy was available in various carbon qualities; the cheaper C-Carbon was the standard in the entry-level range. This is changing fundamentally: all 2026 Tallboy frames will be made from CC carbon - the highest quality ply material that Santa Cruz uses in-house. This means a better stiffness-to-weight ratio and higher quality even in the cheapest model (from € 5,999). Those who previously only had access to CC carbon with a high budget can now get it at an entry-level price. All frames also have internally routed cable guides for mechanical shifting.
The new Tallboy is 300 g lighter than its predecessor and more than 400 g lighter than the slightly lighter Tallboy. beefier Trailbike 5010. The total weight starts at 13.2 kg - a good value for a full-suspension 29er trail bike with 130 mm rear suspension travel. According to Santa Cruz, the weight saving was a driving factor behind the switch from the VPP construction to the four-link. This is because the design alone makes it lighter.
The Glovebox - Santa Cruz's internal storage system in the down tube - gets a solid upgrade. Version 2 has an improved locking mechanism and the lid is tighter to prevent rattling noises. There is also a new tool holder under the top tube - also known from the Santa Cruz e-bikes. The separation of snacks and tools creates order and saves space in the main compartment.
With the new Tallboy, Santa Cruz goes one step further than most of its competitors: not only does the geometry change with the frame size - the stiffness is also size-dependent. This should ensure that an XS Tallboy feels just like an XXL. Six sizes (XS to XXL) cover a broad spectrum. The new rear triangle design also enables a greater seatpost insertion depth across all sizes. This means that tall riders in particular can enjoy telescopic seatposts with a larger adjustment range.
