The new Santa Cruz Tallboy is a thoroughbred trail bike with more travel and a traction-orientated four-link rear suspension, while the old bike with only 120/130 millimetres of travel and a very sportily tuned chassis had a cross-country feeling here and there.

Santa Cruz gives its 29er trail mountain bike a completely new four-link rear triangle, saves 300 grams compared to its predecessor and for the first time comes with CC carbon - the Californians' highest quality ply material - in all equipment variants. 130 mm rear, 140 mm front, prices from 5999 euros. Curtain up for the new Santa Cruz Tallboy.

Conclusion on the 2026 Tallboy

The Tallboy has always been the bike for riders who don't want to compromise: light enough for real uphill ambitions, fast enough for demanding trails. The new version goes one better: 300 g less, new kinematics, no more carbon trimmings even in the cheapest model. I'm curious to see whether the new four-bar linkage delivers what the figures promise in practice. - Max Fuchs, BIKE test editor

Four-bar linkage: The largest cut

This is the most important innovation: Santa Cruz has converted the Tallboy to a completely new four-link rear suspension. Previously, the trail bike relied on the typical Santa Cruz VPP design with a low-mounted shock. Now comes the technology that Santa Cruz has recently established on its e-bikes.

Josh Kissner, Director of Product, puts it in a nutshell: "The main aim was to create a different riding experience to the previous models - moderately progressive, smooth on small bumps, agile and sporty at the same time. The specifically low anti-rise value and the even lower anti-squat value should give the bike more traction when braking and create more comfort when pedalling.

Practical side effects: The frame weight is reduced and the seatpost insertion depth is increased - both of which enable longer telescopic seatposts across all sizes.

Slimmed down and bored out: Less weight and more suspension travel for the Tallboy

300 g lighter than its predecessor, more than 400 g less than the 5010 - these are the weight promises. The total weight starts at 13.2 kilos. The suspension travel: 130 mm at the rear, 140 mm at the front. This clearly identifies the Tallboy as a trail bike. The predecessor with only 120/130 millimetres and a sporty set-up, on the other hand, still exuded a little cross-country flair here and there.

CC carbon for everyone, no more compromises

Another pleasing feature of the new model range is that all Tallboy frames are now made from CC carbon - the highest quality ply material that Santa Cruz has in-house and which was previously reserved for high-end models. All frames are also fitted with cable ducts for mechanical shifting.

The new bike is available in six frame sizes from XS to XXL. Santa Cruz also promises size-dependent geometry and stiffness: riders of all sizes should be able to enjoy perfectly balanced riding characteristics.

Attention to detail: storage compartment, flip chips and co.

The Glovebox - Santa Cruz's internal storage system - gets a solid upgrade in version 2: more robust locking mechanism, more stable lever, new fastening method. The result: no more rattling, longer service life, easier operation. The glovebox is complemented by a new tool holder under the top tube, familiar from the Santa Cruz e-bikes - this leaves more space in the glovebox for bars and the like: High for more propulsion, low for maximum downhill fun.
