After Centurion recently the new No Pogo R and the first electrified gravel bike Crossfire the Swabians have another new addition to announce at the end of the year. The freshly redesigned Backfire R is an e-MTB hardtail that should be suitable for both long tours and lively trail rides. With a 120 mm fork, the latest Bosch Performance Line CX drive and a Bosch PowerTube battery with 800 Wh, the Backfire aims to combine riding fun and endurance.
Centurion positions the Backfire as an "ideal touring companion", which is also suitable for trail use on moderate terrain. The equipment: 120 mm suspension fork, Bosch CX drive and PowerTube battery with 800 Wh capacity, which can be increased to 1050 Wh using the PowerMore range extender. An EQ version with mudguards, pannier rack, lights and kickstand is available for crossover use. The Backfire aims to combine the versatility of a low-maintenance, lightweight everyday bike with the robustness and dynamism of a mountain bike. The target group includes MTB beginners as well as cyclists looking for an all-round bike for everyday use, commuting and moderate tours. The Swabians are launching the top model R2000 for 4849 euros and the crossover version R2000 EQ for 4999 euros.
Centurion has placed particular emphasis on the frame construction. Thanks to computer-aided analyses and optimisation of the wall thicknesses, the aluminium chassis should be "exceptionally rigid and stable" according to the manufacturer: "This advanced technology minimises weight on the one hand and maximises the durability and performance of the frame on the other." Centurion underpins its claim to quality with a lifetime guarantee on the frame, which is also approved for a total weight of up to 150 kilos. To protect the chainstays of the Backfire from chain slaps and scratches even in rough conditions, Centurion uses its "3rd generation Silent Protection technology". This damping system with continuous air chambers is designed to protect against bumps and impacts and reduce noise. As a result, the Backfire should remain whisper-quiet even during intensive use and demanding applications.
The dimensions of the Backfire (size L) are generous: 460 mm reach, 698 mm stack and a wheelbase of 1223 millimetres are aimed at smooth running and riding safety. The steering and seat angle are moderate.
For a manageable €150, the Backfire is also available with high-quality EQ full equipment - so everything is on board for cycling holidays or everyday use. For example, the Racktime SNAPIT 2.0 Deluxe pannier rack, including integrated rear light. Further everyday features: the Halo Mini rear light attached to the dropouts. Twelve LEDs per rear light enable optimum light distribution and ensure excellent visibility from all directions. Also on board: a high-quality Lezyne front light with 310 lumens, robust mudguards and, of course, a kickstand.
We have reported sufficiently on the Bosch Performance Line CX. The latest generation Swabian power unit sets standards in terms of performance and efficiency. With a maximum torque of 85 Nm and up to 600 watts of peak power, the power pack delivers dynamic and extremely potent support on demanding tours. The Gen5 is also pleasantly quiet.
Thought has also been given to the integration of the drive. To ensure that the powerful engine is ideally cooled, air inlets provide optimum ventilation. In addition, the striking engine cover is designed to reliably protect the unit from stone chips and dirt.
Typical for Centurion: the design of the charging socket. Conveniently, the charging flap can be fully retracted during the charging process or when connecting an optional PowerMore additional battery. This prevents the flap from tearing off. It also closes magnetically and protects the charging socket from splash water and dirt.
With 800 Wh, the new PowerTube battery is not only more durable than its 750 Wh predecessor, but also lighter. The improved energy density and more compact design enable longer and more efficient rides.
Bosch's minimalist system controller is integrated into the top tube of the Backfire. It displays all essential information such as riding mode and charge status. With its Bluetooth connectivity to the eBike Flow app, it forms the control centre on the Backfire. The System Controller is combined with Bosch's Mini Remote, which is mounted directly on the handlebars and extends the range of functions of the Smart System. In combination with the Mini Remote, for example, a smartphone can also be used as a display and the smart pushing aid can be utilised.
