The Specialized Status 170 2 comes with 170 mm of travel on the frame, following on from its predecessor, the Status 160, which we deemed inadequate for demanding trails in an earlier BIKE test. This is now set to change with the new generation. There is also a downhill version - with a 180 mm suspension fork!

Specialized claims that the new Specialized Status 170 2 is an MTB that can be ridden no matter how and where. Suitable for park rides, trails or a stealth session on a concrete wall. The familiar Status is now available with 170 or 180 mm travel.

Every Specialized Status build starts with an aluminium 5-frame and lightweight Roval Alloy DH wheels. For the downhill version: The Rockshox Super Deluxe Select Coil shock, the Boxxer suspension fork with 180 mm travel and the Sram Maven Bronze brakes (4-piston caliper, 220/200 mm discs) are designed to stop the downhill bike safely even after big gaps and in super steep sections.
The tamer model variant is fitted with a Fox DHX Performance shock, a Fox Float 38 Rhythm suspension fork and the TRP Trail EVO with 203 mm discs, which we always rate highly.

Finely tuned driving dynamics
Before the Specialized Status 2 arrives on your doorstep or in the bike shop, it is tuned by the Specialized Ride Dynamics team - a group of mountain bike suspension experts. The characteristics of the steel spring shock are designed to complement the kinematics of the new Status 2.

Individualisation of the Specialized Status 170
Both versions of the Specialized Status 170 2 have flip chips on the Horst pivot link in front of the rear axle. These make it possible to fine-tune the geometry of the frame to the desired riding style or terrain.

The bikes are delivered in a high position, but can also be "flipped" to a lower position - which means an 8 mm lower bottom bracket and half a degree lower head tube angle, according to Specialized. The bike comes from the factory in a mullet set-up, i.e. with 29-inch tyres at the front and 27.5-inch tyres at the rear. It will be available from dealers for 4200 euros.
