The US manufacturer Specialized is expanding its Levo series with a cargo version. The S-Works Levo 4 X is based on the full-suspension E-MTB Levo 4 and has been supplemented with a special luggage rack system. The Americans want to combine riding strength and trail fun with suitability for everyday use and transport capacity. The motto. One bike, countless possible uses. Whether alpine adventure, trail party, commuting or cargo bike transport volume - the new Levo X should be able to do it all.
In Specialized's marketing language, the extended range of applications is called "Electric Overland". The newcomer should not only work on the trail, but also be suitable for bikepacking tours, everyday transport and longer adventure missions. The Levo 4 X adopts the basic specifications of the S-Works Levo 4. the lightweight Levo R (tested here) and the downhill Levo Evo with more suspension travel the Levo X is the next step up from the new Turbo Levo 4 from Specialized.
The centrepiece of the X version is a patented front and rear carrier system. The front carrier is designed for 10 kg, the rear carrier for 12 kg and is MIK 3-pin compatible. This results in a total transport capacity of 22 kg. Both carriers are attached directly to the main frame and are designed to minimise the impact on the bike's riding and suspension characteristics.
The pannier racks are also available as aftermarket accessories and are compatible with all Levo 4 and Levo R models. Owners of these bikes can therefore retrofit their bikes. This is particularly relevant because Specialized currently only sells its cargo version in combination with the sinfully expensive S-Works model for € 14,499.
The Levo X is probably the most off-road capable bikepacking bike you can buy in the shops. However, it's not really a new bike, but merely an unusual combination with the new, patented pannier racks for the front and rear. If you are planning long tours or want to use your Levo for everyday use, you can upgrade your favourite with this. As a pure cargo or bikepacking vehicle, the super-expensive high-end bike makes less sense - its trump card is its versatility.
