Trek Inbound+: A premium brand at an entry-level price – this new city e-bike gets a lot right

When people think of Trek, they think of carbon road bikes costing four-figure sums or full-suspension trail bikes. Affordable everyday transport has not, until now, been the core business of the brand from Waterloo, Wisconsin. That is precisely what is changing right now: The new District+ with a mid-drive motor was very reasonably priced. With the Inbound+, Trek presents an urban e-bike that is even more affordable, whilst still being firmly geared towards everyday use. The entry-level model remains below the psychologically significant €2,000 mark.

Bosch Hub Line: New motor, new concept

The heart of Inbound+ is the new Bosch Hub Line hub motor. Anyone who has previously associated Bosch with the tried-and-tested mid-drive motor will need to think again: the Hub Line is housed in the rear wheel and transmits its 45 Nm of torque directly via the hub. The motor has a few other advantages too – such as its unobtrusive design. Above all, however, the Hub Line is really good value for money and lightweight too. This is reflected in its weight: depending on the model, the Inbound+ weighs between 20.5 and 22.6 kg, which is a good figure for a fully-equipped city e-bike, even with small batteries.

The compact Purion 200 All-in-One is used as the display. Anyone already using the Bosch ecosystem – whether with another e-bike in the family or the eBike Flow app – can integrate the Inbound+ seamlessly. The battery capacities range from 360 to 600 watt-hours. The fact that the batteries can even be removed with ease is not something to be taken for granted in a lightweight and affordable city e-bike.

Three models, clear positioning

Trek keeps its model range straightforward: three variants cater to different needs.

The Inbound+ 2 B features a belt drive and single-speed transmission – maintenance-free, quiet and durable. For city cyclists in flat regions, this is the most practical solution: no oiling, no adjustments, no dirt on your trouser legs. With a 360 Wh battery, it costs €2,149; with the larger 540 Wh battery, it costs €2,349 – both available as low-step models with a diamond frame.

If you fancy cycling on hillier terrain or out into the countryside, go for the Inbound+ 2 R8. The Shimano Essa 8-speed derailleur It provides the necessary bandwidth and performs reliably, as this test has shown. The 360 Wh battery keeps the price down to an attractive 1,999 euros – the lowest entry-level price in the entire range.

The top-of-the-range model is the Inbound+ 2 R10: a Shimano CUES 10-speed gearbox and a large 600 Wh battery for maximum range are significantly higher quality than those found on the cheaper models. The price is 2,499 euros. For frequent cyclists and anyone who wants to play it safe, this is the logical choice. All models are fitted with affordable yet functional hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano.

SP Connect and wireless charging: a real highlight

What makes the Inbound+ even more exciting is the integrated SP-Connect mobile phone holder on the stem – fitted as standard on every model. A lovely touch that makes separate – and often rather unattractive – solutions unnecessary. Even more interesting: the mount is powered and supports wireless charging with compatible accessories. This is a real bonus, particularly when your mobile is being used as a larger display or sat-nav – and, given the price point, it’s anything but a given.

Designed for everyday use, right down to the last detail

Trek has ensured the Inbound+ comes fully equipped: integrated lights, long mudguards and a high-quality rear rack compliant with the MIK HD standard are all fitted as standard. The latter allows for easy fitting of compatible bags and baskets. The battery is removable and secured with a key, allowing it to be charged at the office or at home without needing access to the bike. Several mounting points on the frame offer additional flexibility for accessories.

The adjustable stem allows you to set the handlebar height to suit your needs without much fiddling about, whilst the geometry is designed for an upright, comfortable ride. The Inbound+ is available in two frame styles – Step Over (SO), also known as a diamond frame, and Low Step (LS), i.e. a low-step frame – in sizes S to XL, depending on the model. In terms of colour, Trek has opted for understated, timeless pastel shades.
