There are now several manufacturers of good children's bikes. The range of use varies from "scooting to kindergarten" to "upcoming talent". Supurb children's bikes were and are intended from the outset as sports equipment for kids who want to go mountain biking. This was already the case when Sebastian Tegtmeier and Jürgen Schlender jointly founded the first Supurb children's MTBs started building them in 2012 and breathed the enduro genes of their aluminium mountain bikes into them.
The new Supurb children's mountain bikes are now built and sold exclusively by Bike Components. And they once again demonstrate the sporting ambitions of the 16-inch to 24-inch bikes. Even the smallest bike, the Supurb Bo16, comes with wide 2.25-inch tyres and disc brakes. The father of the Supurbs, Sebastian Tegtmeier, and the development team at Bike Components (BC) have also come up with clever details for children's bikes in the new edition.
"We build children's mountain bikes that work off-road. That means we don't compromise on the add-on parts," says Tegtmeier, who is now Director of Customer Experience at BC rather than assembling the bikes. Specifically: SRAM derailleurs on Bo20 and Bo24; Manitou suspension fork with easily adjustable air spring on the Bo24; upgrade option for a suspension fork on the Bo20. And: Option for a dropper post on the Bo24.
Sebastian Tegtmeier is particularly proud of the special hub in the Supurb Bo16. "We use a hub with very fine teeth on the small single-speed bike," he explains. "Cheaper hubs with larger gearing cause more idle travel when pedalling, which leads to undesirable shifts in the centre of gravity and the child gets out of rhythm when pedalling." And it almost sounds like the well-known Chris King hub - laughs Sebastian.
All three Supurb children's bikes are available in four colours: gecko green, badger blue, bee yellow and fox red. The children's mountain bikes come almost completely pre-assembled and are ready to ride within a few minutes.
Not much happened at Supurb between 2018 and 2023 - at least for the end customer. Sebastian Tegtmeier and Jürgen Schlenders, both known at the time under the Alutech labelThe company founded the Supurb brand, captured the zeitgeist with real mountain bikes for children and quickly sold many of their MTBs. "But then we simply didn't have the courage to invest in the brand," explains Tegtmeier. In 2012 and beyond, Supurb was probably the only supplier of sporty bikes in small children's sizes, and they would have had to grow quickly to meet the demand. What was probably missing was the courage.
"Alutech was running in parallel for us, and we didn't want to sell the brand to any producer." Direct sales were already being handled by Bike Components from Würselen near Aachen, and in 2018 Tegtmeier sold Supurb to BC.
Time jump: In spring 2022, Sebastian moves from Santa Cruz to Bike Components. And as luck would have it, BC has meanwhile revived the Supurb children's bikes as its own brand - and developed them further. The special hub on the Bo16 and the brake disc hidden behind the seat stay come from the BC developers.
Sebastian Tegtmeier is not only pleased that his "Supurb Babies" are being built again. He also sees a major advantage for customers in the fact that everything now comes from a single source from BC: "Customers can also get everything else they need from us. From suitable clothing and safety equipment - simple helmets to children's full faces, knee pads and protectors - and the necessary tools."
