Propain had real conflicts of conscience with parents with the Kids' Fully Frechdax causesattractive, but expensive (1399-1599 euros). With the Dreckspatz hardtail, the direct mail order company is now showing that it is also possible to go cheaper: Even 999 euros is not pocket money for a children's bike, but for that you get a fully-fledged mountain bike. The highlight: With the in-house components, the MTB weighs less than nine kilos ready to ride - so you can even expect the youngsters to tackle their first uphills. The gearing is a 1x10 mix from Shimano's road bike portfolio: 105 rear derailleur, Ultegra cassette (11-25) and Tiagra shifters.
However, Propain's Dreckspatz shows its full potential downhill: the lightweight fork (with carbon crown) can be adjusted to low rider weights and is buttery smooth, the platform pedals are light and grippy. The manoeuvrable cockpit and the slack steering angle give junior riders additional confidence on descents. The Dreckspatz Race rolls on 20-inch wheels and is therefore suitable for riders over 105 centimetres tall. The version with 16-inch wheels offered with the Fully Frechdax has been omitted.
Race999 euros, 8.6 kg (without pedals), 80 mm travel, 20-inch wheels, 1x10 Shimano. Available as Dirt sparrow start (singlespeed) for 899 euros.
"Low weight and suitable components - this makes the Propain Dreckspatz a guarantee of fun off-road." (BIKE editor-in-chief Josh Welz, father of two biking children)
