The Canyon Neuron Young Hero has been available since the Modernisation almost one and a half years ago unchanged in the programme of the Koblenz-based mail order company. And for good reason: with a beautifully finished aluminium frame, cables routed through the frame, 27.5-inch wheels and 130 millimetres of suspension travel, it is not a bike for showing off, but a children's MTB for trails and tours.
It is available in XS (test size) and 2XS, and our test rider was able to activate the suspension travel well. This means that the suspension travel was well utilised. Tuned for children, the suspension elements respond finely and offer sufficient end progression. At 1.45 metres, Paul fits perfectly on the bike - 29 inches would be possible on a hardtail at his height, but not with so much suspension travel. Which is better? If you ask the kids, it's definitely the fully.
The twelve-speed Deore drivetrain, the only twelve-speed drivetrain in the test field, offers 510 per cent gear range for every occasion. The mixed tyres with Nobby Nic at the front and Rocket Ron at the rear combine easy rolling with good grip. On the technical sections of the test tracks, Paul benefits from the rollover advantage over the 26-inch wheels, but also from the grippy front tyre. The seat angle is very steep and the reach is short. The bike is approved for sporadic jumps of up to 60 centimetres in height and is intended for touring and trails.
At 13.7 kilos, the bike has a bit of flab on its ribs for a kids' bike with this range of use - this is due to the simple equipment. At 1599 euros, the price is hot for a sensible kids' bike. This is where Canyon flexes its muscles as a direct-to-consumer brand. The bike has a wide range of uses and is in good shape both uphill and downhill.
Everything fits on this bike, the suspension worked great. However, I would like wider pedals. - Paul, 12 years old, BIKE junior test rider
(Note: The pedals on the Canyon were not standard, but fitted by BIKE).
Weight: complete bike without pedals, wheel weight: incl. brake disc, cassette, tubes, tyres, seat height: measured from pedal surface (pedal height 18 mm) in lowest crank position to top edge of saddle
