E-cargo bikes are an environmentally friendly alternative to cars. However, to outperform their four-wheeled metal rivals, cargo bikes have to be able to do a lot. The new e-cargo bike Btwin Long John F900E Family from Decathlon is equipped with numerous design solutions that are intended to optimally support cyclists on every ride. And: there is even a patented feature on board.
For its primary purpose - transporting loads - the new e-cargo bike from Decathlon has a large front box. It is equipped with a two-seater bench and a folding single bench, both of which have cushions and backrests. The small passengers are securely strapped in with a 5-point safety belt. Entry and exit is via a door.
The highlight of the front box is the permanently mounted, patented rain cover with wind protection, which is designed to make the cargo bike more weather-independent. It's raining men - from now on, no more... The reflective fabric of the canopy can be quickly opened and stowed away. A small overhang protects your hands from the rain. There are also side attachments to which clip lights can be attached for better visibility.
The box is made from Okoume wood with sturdy riveted joints and offers numerous storage options. These include a lockable glove compartment, an open compartment for a bike lock and a further compartment under the two-seater bench inside the front box. An elasticated net is also attached to the rear of the box, ideal for helmets or small bags.
According to Decathlon, the Btwin Long John F900E offers precise and responsive steering thanks to a double cable system in the headset. This design is intended to minimise play and enable increased manoeuvrability thanks to the large steering angle. The cables are made of stainless steel and are double-coated for added durability.
The stand with horns ensures stability when the cargo bike is not rolling and also makes it easy for the rider and children to get on and off. The frame geometry with low step-through should have the advantage of placing the soles of the feet flat on the ground when getting on and off.
The Brose S Mag mid-engine with a rated output of 250 watts and a maximum torque of 90 Nm according to the manufacturer provides powerful assistance. Riders can choose between three support modes that make pedalling easier as required: +60%, +240% and +410% when fully loaded.
The motor is equipped with a torque sensor that adjusts the electric assistance based on the pedalling force exerted, thus ensuring a natural riding experience. Assistance is provided up to a speed of 25 km/h and the motor is powered by a powerful 630 Wh lithium-ion battery.
According to the manufacturer Decathlon, the Long John F900E e-cargo bike weighs 66 kg and can handle a load of up to 184 kg, resulting in a maximum permissible total weight of 250 kg. The Tektro MH535 brakes offer progressive deceleration thanks to the 4-piston disc brakes and 180 mm brake discs.
The robust hollow chamber rims made of anodised aluminium, specially developed for this model, have 20" on the front wheel and 26" on the rear wheel. A protective band under the tread ensures high puncture resistance for the tyres, while reflective strips on the sidewalls increase visibility at night. The 50 mm suspension travel at the front is responsible for more comfort on every ride. The 5-speed Nexus hub gears are from Shimano.
The cargo e-bike is equipped with a Herrmans 30 lux front light and a rear light, both of which are powered by the bike battery. An integrated sensor increases the light intensity of the rear light when the bike brakes.
The pannier rack is designed for loads of up to 27 kg, which means that children and bags can also be packed without any problems. A colour display on the stem shows the time, the battery status and the selected support mode. A permanently installed Ringlock frame lock is also integrated.
The Btwin e-bike is equipped with a 4G/WLAN/Bluetooth box that communicates with the cloud. This makes it possible to establish a connection to the smartphone. Thanks to the integrated GPS, the cargo bike can be located and notifications are sent in the event of unusual movements.
The system also displays information on the kilometres covered. Other data such as average speed or even calories burnt are also included. The connectivity service is free for the first year and can be cancelled monthly thereafter.
The Decathlon Btwin Long John F900E is now available for €4,999 in the colour Rose at Deacthlon available. A yellow version is planned for the end of August. A platform version of the e-cargo bike without a front box will also be available for the Btwin F900E in the coming months.
