The mountain bike helmets from Troy Lee Designs are particularly popular with freeriders and downhillers. The style, safety and comfort speak for themselves. With the A3, the Californians are expanding their portfolio with another half-shell helmet for enduro and trail use. Expectations are high, as the predecessor A2 MIPS scored "very good" in the last BIKE helmet test and took the test victory.
A bike helmet that you don't want to take off?
The A3 is said to be so comfortable that you won't want to put it down. The reason for this is said to be the newly developed padding and the 3-position adjustment system. An extra forehead pad is also designed to prevent sweat from dripping into the eyes or onto the lenses by wicking it away to the rear. A sophisticated ventilation system should also provide the necessary cooling on hot days. Compared to the test winner helmet in BIKE 12/20, the A2, the new Troy Lee Designs helmet should be even more comfortable to wear.
The A3 features the MIPS anti-rotation system, which also impressed with its excellent damping values on the A2. It ensures that dangerous rotational forces are reduced in the event of a fall. For enduro and trail use, the helmet shell of the A3 extends extra far down at the back of the head. For even better damping, the helmet shell consists of two components and the fastener on the A3 is magnetic. The Fidlock fastener can be operated with one hand and closes reliably.
The minimally adjustable visor on the A2 was one of the few points of criticism in the last helmet test. Troy Lee Designs has made improvements and equipped the visor of the A3 with a 3-position adjustment system. This should give the goggle enough space when it is not in use. The adjustment system can also cope with extra-large goggles. The A3 is said to exceed the safety test standards EN 1078, CSPC 1203 and NZS 2063.
