Riding enjoyment is achieved with few resources: The fork and cockpit have a big influence on handling. You can feel this on the reasonably priced SX.

Speciality bikes instead of mainstream: factory tuning was a trend in 2014 and remains topical for 2015. In the case of the Anthem SX, factory tuning means a 120 mm fork in the head tube and a Vario seat post in the seat tube. You ride with a shorter stem and wider handlebars. The very sporty, marathon-compatible Anthem basic concept is transformed into a playful singletrack machine. What's new about this idea? The answer: the price. Giant offers the Anthem SX for 2299 euros, while similarly customised models from competitors are usually in the upper price segment. For 2299 euros you get a functional Shimano SLX groupset with good ergonomics, decent wheels, which, like all components, come from Giant's own Contact series, as well as a lightweight aluminium frame (2.6 kilos with shock).

The Maestro suspension works comfortably as usual. The three stages of the Fox CTD damper noticeably change the function. Of course, the rear works most sensitively in downhill mode, which effectively takes the edge off rough trails. The more winding the trail, the more fun it is to ride. With its short wheelbase, the Anthem SX is an extremely agile bike. It wants to be ridden actively. So get out of the saddle, pedal, turn in, pull off over the next crest and sprinkle in a little moto-whip. The downside of this agile design: You have to hold on to the handlebars at high speed. The 27.5 Anthem is not as smooth-running as a 29er. As usual, the Maestro system with its bearings in the wheel centre is only moderately stiff (65 Nm/degree), which powerful riders will feel when setting off. In the points table, we rated the Anthem SX according to marathon criteria. Despite its relatively high weight, it scores a lot of points here. However, with its orientation, the bike is definitely suitable for all-mountain riding.

Conclusion A playful touring speedster with solid equipment at an attractive price. The SX in the name stands for more riding fun on single trails and downhill.
