The Spectral 29er looks like its 27.5-inch brother, the Nerve AL (BIKE 5/14 ->) is very similar. Canyon has given its models a recognisable look via the frame layout - the top tube practically flows into the seat stays, which also ensures a large standover height. The Spectral 29er rolls out of our test lab with good values (stiffness, suspension weight, wheel weight), nothing is missing from the spec, also considering that we are dealing with the cheapest bike in the test group - mail order or not. On the trail, the Spectral feels very balanced, it doesn't have the sluggish goods train feeling of other 29ers, it climbs in a relaxed and comparatively light-footed manner. The rear end remains stable when seated under load and only rocks noticeably when pedalling - we would like to see a firmer climb mode here. We recommend a longer stem for those who want to sit a little more sportily despite the long top tube.
ConclusionMission accomplished, the Spectral is very well balanced. The geometry, equipment and weight make it the sportiest bike in this test.
PLUS Price/performance, balanced, sporty riding behaviour, comfortable saddle, wide range of use
MINUS Cables/cables attached with plastic clips, screw axle at the rear
The alternative
For even tougher use, it's worth taking a look at the Spectral AL 9.9 EX with a 34 mm Fox fork (140 mm travel), single chainring and chain guide. It is said to weigh 13.6 kilos and costs 3399 euros.
