The more favourable Aluminium version in this test convinced the testers. Together with Merida, Giant put together the best equipment package among the specialist brands with a complete Shimano XT groupset and Fox Performance suspension. The fact that no compromises were made on the Trance on the descents is evident from the solid chain guide with bashguard to prevent accidental contact. In terms of weight, the frame and overall weight are in the midfield. In combination with the easy-to-accelerate wheels, the Giant climbs quite well, even if the shock pumps a little when pedalling out of the saddle without a platform. Downhill, the Trance with its slack 66.3 steering angle is one of the smoothest candidates. However, two components slow down the downhill fun. Firstly, the handlebars are narrow and the grip of the inexpensive Schwalbe performance tyres is too low. The lively suspension works at a good level.
ConclusionExcept for the tyres and handlebars, the Trance is very strong in all areas. Winner specialised trade!
The alternativeFor 400 euros less, the Trance 2 offers SLX instead of XT equipment and a slightly cheaper Fox fork.
