Affordable and versatile: Rocky Mountain Instinct A50
The Instinct is the cheapest bike in the Rocky Mountain model range and, just like its more expensive brothers, was able to impress in the BIKE test.

In BIKE 3/18 we were already able to test the almost twice as expensive version of the Instinct with the over 500 gram lighter carbon frame. For this comparison, we had to go for the cheapest Instinct in the Rocky Mountain line-up. Despite the aluminium frame, the A50 comes second in terms of frame weight and also slightly undercuts the average overall weight. However, Rocky could only supply the smaller frame size M for this test. The BIKE crew, including reader tester Jan, experienced an aha effect on the first few metres of off-road riding. The only Fox suspension in this comparison was surprisingly sensitive and extremely active. Even in rough sections, the suspension proved to be potent and plush. Depending on the position of the Ride 9 system, the rear provides up to 156 millimetres of travel. However, the rear suspension pumps minimally when pedalling. Both uphill and downhill, the 29er impresses with its balanced handling. The integrated chain guide is a useful detail. However, the Sram-level brakes and low range of the 11-speed drivetrain cost points.

Test summary: Even the most affordable Rocky Mountain Instinct in the model range can convince as a balanced and versatile all-mountain bike.
