The European Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products (Safety Gate) has issued an official warning regarding two popular Urban e-bikes. The models affected by this global recall are Specialized Turbo Como SL 4.0 and Turbo Como SL 5.0.
The reason for this measure is a serious technical fault at a safety-critical interface: over time, a fatigue crack may form in the fork steerer. Under dynamic loads whilst riding, there is a risk that, in the worst-case scenario, the fork could break without warning. A resulting sudden loss of steering control would inevitably lead to serious falls and a significant risk of injury to the rider. The affected batches originate from the manufacturer’s country of origin, Taiwan, and, according to the authorities’ inspection, do not comply with the requirements of the European Machinery Directive.
The e-bikes in question must be taken completely off the road. The inspection and professional replacement of the affected fork and steerer tube assemblies must be carried out directly by authorised workshops.
Anyone who owns a Turbo Como SL 4.0 or 5.0 should stop using the bike immediately. As fatigue cracks inside the shaft are not, or are barely, visible to the end user, continuing to ride the bike carries unforeseeable risks. Specialized has set up a dedicated Support and Call-back Website switched on.
Owners are asked to contact an authorised dealer immediately to arrange the next steps and the replacement of the faulty components.
