Bikers speak their own language - their very own slang. We explain terms that usually only mountain bikers know and that are worth adding to your own vocabulary.

Like sailors, IT experts or teenagers, bikers also have their own way of expressing themselves. Slang often arises spontaneously and creatively in language communities. Some terms are funny, others are embarrassing and some make you wonder who came up with them.

Words by bikers, for bikers

Here you will find terms from MTB jargon. We explain what's behind it - if you don't already know it anyway.

Trail emo

No matter how spectacular the trail, how perfectly shaped the bends or how epic the scenery - trail emos are not to be enthused about. No howls of joy, no laughter, not even a grin. It's hard to tell whether they are silently rejoicing or inwardly suffering.

Headbanger

The word is familiar from the heavy metal scene. It describes the ecstatic shaking of the head to the rhythm of the music. When biking, on the other hand, this tends to happen involuntarily - for example during a rough landing. The head then snaps forwards due to the force of the impact and bounces back again. Argh!

Bike park hooligan

The name says it all: bike park hooligans bawl, turn up their music and usually speak in coarse language - they often hang out in the cable car car park with energy cans in their hands. In short - bike park hooligans are unpleasant fellows.

Boeing landing

The Boeing landing is generally a safe option for bikers - and the clear opposite of a sniper landing. This refers to a landing after a jump that is so wide and so long that - to exaggerate - even a Boeing aeroplane could land there. Such Boeing landings should be built more often, as they reduce the risk of falling.

Lanual

Lanuals are the high school for stunt freeriders. The landing is staged here. You drop into the depths or jump, touch down on the rear wheel with pinpoint accuracy and pull straight into a manual (rear wheel ride). The term? A pun on landing and manual. In short: first land, then roll casually down the landing hill on the rear wheel.

Gracer

Not all mountain bikers are the same. No, there are several categories, as we know. Even gravel bikes are not just "something with a drop bar and gravel". Some fall under the name gracer - a play on the words gravel and racer. The name says it all: maximum propulsion, narrow tyres, long riding position. Less coffee ride, more attack.

deduct...

means really firing yourself out of a jump, a root or a rock edge. In other words, jumping off with a pop to gain as much height (airtime) as possible. Sometimes you have to pull off, for example on long gaps - otherwise you'll fall into the ditch.

What counts for him is not how fast you get from A to B, but what happens in between. Lehner writes reports, interviews scene celebrities and tests products and bikes - preferably those with a lot of suspension travel.
