It is perhaps the oldest partnership in the sport of mountain biking: after 38 years, trials icon Hans Rey and GT Bicycles are parting ways. In the video, Hans bids farewell to GT and announces the next chapter. "I'm not done yet!"

Topics in this article

The living Statue of Liberty, hero of the first mountain bike films on VHS tapes, trials icon and E-MTB pioneer. It may be that the word legend is overused in relation to mountain bikers. But he really is one: Hans "no way" Rey.

Hans Rey and GT: Partnership since 1987

Since 1987, two years before this magazine was founded, Hans' name has been closely associated with the cult brand GT Bicycles. Hans inspired generations of mountain bikers and his GT Zaskar bike was one of the most sought-after models of the 90s. Like no other, Hans conveyed the mountain biking attitude to life and preferred a casual ride or a beer with friends to counting bets and kilos, while at the same time forever changing the image of what the general public thought was possible on a bike with his trial moves.

GT paused

Hans Rey has retained this pioneering spirit to this day. He recognised the potential of e-MTBs at an early stage and repeatedly provided stories about new trails and exciting challenges for our magazine. After prolonged financial difficulties (BIKE reported), it has now been decided to put the GT brand on ice for the time being - which also marks the end of Hans' contract with GT Bicycles. In the video, he looks back on 38 years of mountain bike history with GT and also gives a brief outlook. Absolutely worth seeing!

Adrian Kaether's favourite thing to do is ride mountain bikes on bumpy enduro trails. The tech expert and bike tester knows all about Newton metres and watt hours, high and low-speed damping. As test manager at MYBIKE, Adrian also likes to think outside the box and tests cargo bikes and step-through bikes as well as the latest (e-)MTBs.
