Bicycle locks are usually heavy, unwieldy and rattle annoyingly on the frame. Abus now wants to change this and is launching the Yarnit 4004K, a chain lock with a "knitted look". We took a look at whether the textile innovation is just a design gimmick or whether the stylish fabric also makes life difficult for thieves.

Anyone who parks their urban bike or stylish gravel bike for an espresso in the city knows the dilemma: a solid U-lock is secure, but bulky. A simple chain often scratches the paintwork. With the new Yarnit 4004K has embarked on a new path, which should appeal to design enthusiasts and city commuters in particular.

The Abus Yarnit 4004K at a glance

  • Construction method: Multi-layer chain lock (steel core + hybrid textile-steel cable layer).

  • Diameter: 24 mm.
  • Lengths: Available in 85 cm, 110 cm and 140 cm.

Shift work for safety

What looks like a fashion accessory at first glance is technically a complex sandwich system. At the centre is a classic hardened steel chain that provides the necessary resistance. However, the secret of the Yarnit 4004K lies in the sheathing: a hybrid construction of textile fibres and an embedded steel cable forms the middle layer, while the outer sheath is made of a high-tech fibre with a trendy knitted look.

With an overall diameter of 24 millimetres, the lock looks bulky and intimidating, but remains surprisingly flexible thanks to the textile part.

Light and shade in urban applications

Advantages:

  • Gentle on the frame: The soft textile cover is your paintwork's best friend. Scratches are a thing of the past.
  • Rattle-free: Where steel meets steel, it makes noise. The Yarnit 4004K absorbs vibrations - a blessing for anyone transporting the lock wrapped around the frame.
  • Flexibility miracle: Thanks to its soft structure, the lock can also be threaded around thicker street lamps or angled railings where rigid U-locks fail.
  • Comfort locking system: The picking-protected cylinder locks automatically.

Disadvantages:

  • Pollution: As stylish as the textile surface is - according to Abus, the fabric does not absorb dirt in muddy weather, but it can bind dirt much more visibly than a smooth plastic cover.
  • Weight: Although it is lighter than purely solid armoured chains, for ultralight fans a chain will always be heavier than a minimalist cable lock due to its design.
  • Security level: Abus positions the Yarnit for "short stops". A solid U-lock of the highest level remains the first choice for overnight storage of an expensive e-bike at the railway station.

The competition: who else is working on security?

Abus is not alone in the market for "soft locks". Anyone looking for alternatives should take a look at these models:

  1. Tex-lock Eyelet Set: The pioneer of textile locks from Leipzig. Uses a similar composite system of high-tech fibres and steel core, but often offers a combination of cable and shackle (U-Lock); price from 139 euros
  2. Hiplok Gold: A classic for the urban environment. Less "textile-chic", but optimised to be worn directly as a belt around the waist; price from 109.95 euros
  3. Litelok ONE: Uses the patented "Boaflexicore" - a very light, flexible material that is also extremely difficult to cut, but has more of a flat ribbon look; price from 89 euros
  4. Trelock BC 680: A classic chain with a high-quality fabric cover - functionally similar, but without the innovative multi-layer hybrid construction of the Yarnit; price: €82.99

Conclusion of the editorial team:

With the Yarnit 4004K, Abus proves that security doesn't have to look like a building site. It is the ideal lock for aesthetes who want to secure their bike quickly and easily in everyday life without ruining the frame. A must-have for the 2026 season? Definitely for the style-conscious!
