A screwdriver, ratchet function and integrated bit storage all in one: the Gedore Silent Gear makes it possible to reduce your tool kit to a minimum – ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to lug half their workshop around with them. Twelve bits for Phillips, flat-head and Torx screws are neatly stored in the 2K handle to save space.

Our verdict on the Gedore Silent Gear

The Gedore Silent Gear is a well-designed tool for bicycle mechanics looking for a versatile and space-saving spanner. The combination of a bit storage compartment, a precise ratchet mechanism and an ergonomic handle proves its worth in everyday workshop use. A particularly handy feature is that the most important bits are always carried within the handle. One drawback, however, is that accessing the storage compartment can be a little stiff.

Twelve jobs at the Bit Garage

The Silent Gear from Gedore is a magazine-style screwdriver with built-in bits. Inside its handle is a bit storage compartment with space for twelve bits. Included are flat-head bits in the sizes 0.8 x 4.5, 1.0 x 5.5 and 1.2 x 6.5 millimetres, as well as Phillips bits in the sizes PH 1 to PH 3 and PZ 1 to PZ 2. The range is complemented by Torx bits from T10 to T25.

Whether you’re working on a road bike, a gravel bike or an everyday bike, this set covers a large proportion of the standard screw connections. Should you need an additional bit for a specific job, the set can easily be expanded.

Ratchet function with a small return angle

The direction is changed using a rotary ring on the handle. In the clockwise and anti-clockwise positions, the Silent Gear can loosen or tighten screws without the bit having to be re-positioned after each short turning movement. The manufacturer states that the return angle is virtually 0 degrees. In the neutral centre position, the ratchet function is disengaged, allowing the screwdriver to be used like a conventional screwdriver.

In practical use, the mechanism operates precisely and, unlike a ratchet, does not make a ratcheting sound, which feels a bit strange the first time you use it. According to the manufacturer, the maximum torque is 30 newton-metres.

Ergonomic handle and magnetic holder

The handle is made of glass-fibre-reinforced nylon and TPE. The material provides a secure grip even for hands of average size and offers sufficient control when tightening. With a handle width of 38.6 millimetres, the screwdriver is compact.

The 1/4-inch bit holder features a powerful neodymium magnet that holds the bits securely in place. A hanging hole in the handle makes storage easier. However, a little force is required to remove the bits from the handle’s storage compartment.
