Shimano presents new components for the entry-level Cues groupset. With the new rear derailleur and the new 11-speed cassette, a total of 300 grams can be saved compared to the previously available parts.

The rear derailleur weighs 100 grams less than previous Cues models, while the 11-36 cassette even saves 200 grams compared to comparable, very robust Linkglide versions. The 2x11 configuration utilises Hyperglide (HG) technology, which has been used in the road bike sector for decades and promises smoother shifting.

The new Cues components are aimed at riders of road bikes, gravel bikes and all-road bikes in the entry-level segment. The rear derailleur was specially developed for drop-bar bikes and differs from other Cues rear derailleurs thanks to its compact design.

The CS-RS400-11 cassette is available in a single gradation with 11 to 36 teeth. The 327 per cent bandwidth covers both fast group rides and steep climbs. The cassette fits HG Spline M and HG Spline L freehubs, with the latter requiring a 1.85 mm spacer.

Compatibility and ergonomics

The system works together with the ST-U6030 control levers assigned to the Cues family, which have been available since January 2025. Its shape is modelled on the mechanical levers of the 105 road bike groupset and is designed to provide secure access for riders with different hand sizes.

The chainline is 47 mm, which should make room for wider tyres. The rear triangle requires an installation width of 135 to 142 mm, the chainstays should be at least 415 mm long. The cranks use a 110 mm bolt circle.

Other components

Various cranks are available to complete the drivetrain, which have also been in the programme since 2025. The higher-quality FC-U6040-2 with Hollowtech II axle is available in the ratios 50/34 and 46/32, available in 170, 172.5 and 175 mm crank length. The simple FC-U6030-2 offers the same gear ratios, but comes in a two-piece design and is also available in 165 mm.

Market positioning

CUES U6040 2x11 is positioned between Shimano Tiagra R4000 (2x11) and Cues U6030 (2x10). The groupset offers mechanical shifting for all-road use at a lower price level than Tiagra. Exact prices vary according to market and specification, but complete bikes with aluminium frames equipped with this groupset are likely to be in the €1500 price range.
