Chain maintenance is one of those necessary evils when it comes to bike servicing. At the same time, it has a greater impact on wear and tear, gear-changing performance and efficiency than many tuning measures.
For regular maintenance, a standard chain cleaner and fresh lubricant are usually sufficient. Things get trickier when dirt, old oil or wax has become deeply embedded between the pins, rollers and inner plates. This is a much-discussed topic, particularly with hot wax systems. To ensure the wax adheres properly, the chain must be completely free of grease before the first application. Many riders resort to using several degreasing baths, brake cleaners or time-consuming cleaning cycles for this purpose. Others are put off using hot wax altogether by the effort involved and miss out on its immense benefits.
For mountain bikers, a clean chain is less a question of performance. A few watts more or less are barely noticeable off-road. The fact is, however, that a dirty drivetrain wears out much more quickly. Keeping the chain clean should therefore be a priority for every cyclist. An ultrasonic cleaner is a huge help, but is hardly worth the investment for a single bike. Anyone who regularly maintains several bikes and also waxes their chain will find the Dynamic Super Sonic Pro an incredibly practical tool, allowing all drivetrain components to be made spotlessly clean with minimal effort. Stefan Frey, BIKE editor.
This is where ultrasonic cleaners come into their own. Unlike brushes or chain washers, they not only clean the outer surfaces but also reach areas that are virtually inaccessible by mechanical means. The so-called cavitation bubbles dislodge dirt particles even from the tiniest cavities.
However, it is not worth the effort for every mountain biker. Those who lubricate their chain in the traditional way with oil and replace it regularly will generally benefit far less from an ultrasonic bath than riders who own several bikes, convert their drivetrains to hot wax, or want to use their components for as long as possible.
With the new Super Sonic Pro targets Dynamic is aimed primarily at keen DIY mechanics, garages and performance-oriented drivers.
The most exciting new feature is on the inside. Dynamic describes it as the first ultrasonic cleaner for bicycle components to feature pulse and sweep modes. Whilst traditional machines operate at a constant frequency, the new programmes specifically vary the vibrations.
In pulse mode, stronger and weaker ultrasonic vibrations alternate. This is intended to dislodge stubborn residues more effectively. Sweep mode, on the other hand, continuously varies the frequency within a defined range. This is intended to distribute the cleaning energy more evenly throughout the bath, which can be particularly advantageous when cleaning several small components.
However, only a practical test will show whether the additional programmes actually deliver visibly better results than conventional ultrasound machines.
What makes this device particularly interesting is that it can be used for much more than just chains. Typical areas of application include, in particular:
Particularly in the case of hot-wax chains that have been used multiple times, drive components that have become clogged with grime, or elaborately customised bikepacking and road bikes, the benefits add up much more quickly than with a single bike that is only serviced occasionally.
In technical terms, the Super Sonic Pro has a 1.3-litre tank and operates at a maximum frequency of 40 kHz. The bath can be heated to up to 80 degrees Celsius. In addition, the cleaning duration can be set via a timer for up to 30 minutes.
Priced at 139.99 euros, the Super Sonic Pro is clearly aimed at cyclists who take their bike maintenance seriously and regularly carry out repairs themselves. Even those who already use hot wax or maintain several bikes might find an ultrasonic cleaner to be a useful addition to their home workshop.
