Bike rack in the BIKE test
Before setting off on a bike holiday, the question is: How safe are bike racks? Together with our colleagues from GUTE FAHRT, we carried out the moose test with 15 carriers for roof and hitch mounting.

Joe puts the pedal to the metal. The tyres of the VW Passat search in vain for grip and scrape across the asphalt. The moose is already waiting at the other end of the lane. Joe is a pro, he is relentless in his pursuit. At the last second, he yanks the wheel to the left. The fully loaded wheel carrier at the rear clings desperately to the trailer coupling - and stops. 15 times in total this thrill is repeated. Ten towbar carriers and five roof racks have to prove at an airport near Offenburg that they pose no danger to the occupants or road traffic in an emergency. The good news: all test candidates survive the swerve test at 60 km/h and the emergency braking from 80 km/h without any problems.

You can find the results of these car bike carriers in the test:

Bicycle carrier for the coupling:

  • MFT Aluline
  • Mont Blanc Explorer 2
  • Paulchen clutch loader
  • Thule EuroClassic G6 LED 929
  • Twinny Load Compact PA
  • Uebler X21 Nano (BIKE-Tipp hitch carrier)
  • Westfalia BC60

Bicycle carrier for roof mounting:

  • Atera Giro AF
  • Fabbri Bici 3000
  • Mont Blanc Discovery
  • Thule OutRide 561
  • Thule ProRide 591 (BIKE tip roof rack)

Stefan Frey is from Lower Bavaria and loves the mossy, loamy trails of the Bavarian Forest as much as the rugged rock of the Dolomites. For technical descents, he is prepared to tackle almost any ascent - under his own steam. As an accessories specialist, he is the first port of call for questions about equipment and add-on parts, while as head of copywriting he sweeps the language crumbs from the pages of the BIKE print editions.
