Integrated handlebar-stem units make it difficult to fit traditional handlebar mounts for headlamps. For this comparison, therefore, only battery-powered headlights were considered that can be fitted below or in front of the cockpit using an extension arm, i.e. a front mount. This keeps the handlebars tidy and positions the light centrally in front of the bike.
The Lighthammer 100 comes with two mounts. The GoPro-compatible adapter expands the mounting options on many modern aero cockpits. In the ‘mount’ category, Trelock achieves the top score of 1.0. The headlamp is therefore securely mounted and convincingly fulfils the primary purpose of this test.
Removable battery-powered lights are permitted on the road, provided they are fitted at dusk, in the dark or in poor visibility. The headlamp must be adjusted so that it does not dazzle other road users.
On the test track, the Trelock produced an even, uniform beam pattern. The light is distributed consistently across the relevant section of the road, rather than simply casting a bright spot far ahead. This makes it easier to find your way on unlit stretches of road and where the road surface changes.
However, with a sub-score of 2.4, the light pattern falls short of the strongest contenders in the field of seven. Nevertheless, for regular training rides and the journey home after work, the Lighthammer offers a functional light distribution. Correct alignment is also crucial here: the beam should illuminate the road without dazzling oncoming cyclists or motorists.
The battery level indicator is excellent. A green five-LED bar provides a detailed indication of the remaining charge. This is more useful in everyday use than a single warning LED that only lights up just before the device switches off.
Its behaviour as the battery runs low is also impressive: the Lighthammer gradually reduces its output towards the end of its runtime. This ensures that light remains available as a reserve, rather than the headlamp switching off abruptly. The measured runtime of 3 hours 35 minutes results in a sub-score of 2.0. This leaves plenty of scope for longer rides during the darker months of the year, provided the light is fully charged before setting off.
At 74.99 euros, the Lighthammer 100 set is one of the more affordable headlights in the test. Trelock combines the front headlight with a rear light that includes a brake light function. Such an additional function is generally permitted on bicycle rear lights.
The lower price comes with a practical drawback: the charging time of 4 hours 40 minutes is the longest in this comparison. Anyone who uses the headlamp frequently should therefore plan to recharge it well in advance. Build quality and handling are rated 2.0 and 2.3 respectively, which is in keeping with the well-equipped overall package.
