The news therefore primarily marks the return of a well-known model. In its press release, Lupine announces that the Betty BT is once again available; it is not a fundamentally new generation of lamps. The fact that the Betty is one of the brand’s long-standing models is also demonstrated by the BIKE company profile on Lupine.
At the heart of the Betty BT are six Cree XM-L3 LEDs and a separate centre LED. A seven-element lens array featuring TIR technology is designed to distribute the light. In addition to the maximum luminous flux of 5,400 lumens, Lupine specifies 320 lux and a maximum power consumption of 45 watts.
The CNC-milled lamp head is made from black anodised 6061-T6 aluminium. Measuring 54 × 54 × 45 millimetres, it is said to weigh 150 grams. Important to note: this is the weight of the lamp head, not that of the complete system including the battery and mount.
The current product description for the Lupine Betty BT All in One specifies an IPX7 water resistance rating and an IK09 impact resistance rating. It is not possible to judge from the technical specifications alone whether the light distribution, ease of use and heat build-up are satisfactory when used in the field.
The helmet light is powered by an external SmartCore battery with a capacity of 13.8 Ah or 99 Wh. At maximum brightness, it is said to last up to two hours. For the lowest setting, Lupine states in its current online shop that it lasts up to 120 hours. The maximum runtime of 310 hours, which is also mentioned in the press release, is not confirmed there.
A built-in capacity indicator shows the charge level. There is also a three-stage battery warning system and an emergency reserve. According to the technical specifications provided, the charging time is 5.5 hours.
Up to four brightness levels can be individually programmed. Other features include SOS, Alpine SOS, Flash and the separate centre LED. The torch is operated via a button on the body or the Bluetooth remote control supplied.
The complete set allows you to switch between helmet and headlamp use. According to the manufacturer, the FrontClick system enables the lamp head to be moved from one mount to another without the need for tools. Lupine also uses this design, which features an external battery, in its other helmet lamps for various outdoor activities.
The included 120-centimetre extension allows the battery to be stored separately from the lamp head. The package also includes the headband, the FrontClick helmet mount, the remote control with its mount, a Wiesel charger, the Pouch M+ and tools.
For mountain bikers, the main use is as a helmet light. The article explains the role that a light on the helmet plays alongside a headlight on the handlebars, BIKE buying guide to helmet lights for night rides.
