In the bike industry Sram a real power. Drivetrains, suspension elements, wheels and many other components have long been part of the product range of the world's second largest component manufacturer. With the acquisition of the GPS computer manufacturer Hammerhead, Sram is now strengthening its position on the electronics market and positioning itself for the future in the accessories sector. According to Sram, the main aim of the purchase is to utilise the potential of the Hammerhead Karoo 2. The Sram Group also includes Quarq (power meter, suspension & tyre pressure tool) and since February 2021 also the pedal division of Time.
The Karoo 2 is a GPS computer, which has won numerous awards. Hammerhead's rapid growth and its presence in professional cycling attracted the interest of Sram investors at the end of 2020, who finalised the deal at the end of 2021. According to Sram, the Hammerhead brand will be retained and the team's drive for innovation will be utilised to continue producing high-quality bike computers.
It seems particularly interesting that Sram, together with Hammerhead, is developing seamless communication between bike computers and its own AXS componentsbut also with Shimano Di2 components wants to drive forward. Hammerhead computers should be able to be integrated with existing hardware and software - regardless of who builds the electronic shifting on the mountain bike, road bike or gravel bike. So it will be interesting to see what Sram has in store for the electrified future of biking.
