SP Connect Micro Bike Mount review: A smartphone holder with a protective case at a fair price

​Like Quad Lock, SP Connect also uses a system comprising a handlebar mount and a custom-fit smartphone case. This promises a particularly secure connection whilst also protecting the device in everyday use. At around 60 euros for the complete package, however, the price is significantly lower than that of its direct competitor, making the Micro Bike Mount an attractive alternative for keen cyclists.

Great value for money

​Like Quad Lock, so does SP Connect a system comprising a handlebar mount and a custom-fit smartphone case. The manufacturer is thus taking an integrated approach: not only is the smartphone securely attached to the bike, but it also receives effective protection for everyday use. Although this means the holder is tied to a specific smartphone model – unlike universal mounts – it offers advantages in terms of fit and usability.

The Micro Bike Mount impresses right from the moment you fit it. The compact mount can be attached to the handlebars without tools and quickly adapted to different handlebar set-ups. The connection between the mount and the case is via a bayonet lock, which works on a similar principle to that of its direct competitor, Quad Lock. The smartphone is securely locked in place and can be adjusted to different positions as required. It is also intuitive to use and takes very little getting used to.

When in use whilst driving, the system gives the impression of being high quality. The mount is slightly more compact than its competitor’s, but does not seem quite as torsionally rigid as the Quad Lock solution. However, SP Connect scores points with a more attractive price: At around 60 euros for the mount and case, the complete package costs about a third less, yet weighs practically the same. Added to this is an extensive range of accessories, including various mounts and extensions for almost any purpose, both on and off the bike.

​SP Connect Works on the same principle as Quad Lock, but the version we tested costs 30 euros less. The mobile phone case is very high quality, cut to fit the specific model perfectly, and is also slim, robust and fully suitable for everyday use. The mount can be fitted without tools using screw straps and can be quickly swapped between bikes; metal clamp mounts with arms of varying lengths are also available in the range of accessories. The plastic mount on the test version doesn’t quite match the standard of Quad Lock, but it fulfils its purpose reliably and can be fitted without tools. It’s a joy to use, and all controls remain accessible.
