Huge battery, elegant carbon chassis, massive suspension travel: the Torque:On CF from Canyon is an uncompromising gravity e-bike with an enormous range and plenty of capacity. However, when the bike was unveiled in May 2023, there was one fly in the ointment (Test and presentation of the bike HERE). With the Shimano EP8, there was an "old" motor in the frame, because the more powerful EP801 (HERE in the test) had long since been presented at this point. So it's not too surprising that Canyon has come around the corner with a model update just six months later. The Freerider is now available with Shimano's latest drive technology.
Important to know: Even if the appearance of the electrical parts such as batteries and control elements has not changed: The parts for the two versions EP8 and EP801 are not compatible. The EP801 requires specially designed electronics. This should also be borne in mind, for example, by those who already a Spectral:On CF with the same drive and battery system and is interested in battery sharing.
A pleasant side effect of the new edition: there are currently hefty discounts on the 23 models with EP8 motor. The bikes are currently reduced by up to €2000 in the direct mail order company's online shop.
In addition to the motor, Canyon has also tweaked other specifications, eliminating some of the minor criticisms we had of the predecessor. All three models have been given a more robust tyre with Maxxis' Doubledown casing on the rear wheel. In addition, the tyre is now only 2.4 inches wide instead of 2.6 inches, which is better suited to the very sporty range of use of the downhill artist. The Sram Eagle Transmission gearstick on the top model "Roczen" is also new.
The two cheaper models CF 9 and CF 8 have been fitted with higher quality wheels from DT Swiss. This is also a sensible update. This also applies to the larger brake discs. The diameter at the front has been increased from 200 to 220 millimetres. That definitely can't hurt on a bike with this much downhill power.
With the Strive:On CF (Test and presentation HERE!), Canyon also has a second downhill e-MTB in its range. If you can't decide which bike suits you better, we recommend watching our video in which we compare the two gravity e-bikes.
The prices of the 24 models are identical to the original prices of the previous models, despite noticeable updates to the equipment. The new Torque:On bikes are already available on the direct mail order company's website. The CF 8 with a 720 watt-hour battery starts at 5999 euros. As before, all three variants are available with either 720 or 900 watt hours. The battery can be selected as required during the ordering process on the homepage. The price difference is 400 euros; in terms of weight, the 900 watt-hour battery weighs 900 extra grams.
The entry-level model is the 8 Series for 5999 euros with the 720 watt-hour battery. For 6399, however, you can also get the cheapest Torque:On CF with the huge range of the 900 battery. The most affordable bike also has the high-quality full carbon frame on board, as well as the EP801 from Shimano.
The equipment:
The top model of the E-Freerider is a signature edition of German motocross star Ken Roczen. The paintwork is unusual. The Roczen is also the only Torque:On CF with Rockshox suspension and steel spring shock absorbers.
