Tuning noise stop

Loud cracking spoils the fun of a high-tech bike. And hardly any bike shop can help: The search for the causes would be too time-consuming. The only thing that helps is to sniff around for yourself. We provide a remedy and show you the worst sticking points.

*) Rear wheel bearings are also a hiding place for annoying noises. However, as the manufacturers use different systems, we cannot give any tips here. You should definitely contact the manufacturer before attempting to adjust the rear suspension bearings.

DRIVING TEST - HOW TO ISOLATE THE NOISE SOURCE

Against the wall

Whilst driving, background noises prevent you from locating the source of the creaking precisely. Therefore, support yourself in a corner. The front wheel presses against one wall, lean against the other with your shoulder - this will prevent you from falling over. Now you can put the drivetrain under traction by standing on the pedal.

Seat test

The saddle is a frequent troublemaker. It's easy to find out if it's the saddle's fault: simply slide back and forth on the saddle. If it creaks, you have found the culprit. You can tell whether it is caused by the saddle or the seat post by lowering the seat post as far as possible and repeating the test. If it is quiet, it is the saddle or the saddle clamp.

Cradle kick

Creaking noises from the direction of the stem and handlebars reduce the feeling of safety enormously. Ride in a cradle position and consciously pull hard on the handlebar ends. Pedal hard to generate counter-pressure. If the noise increases, apply some grease and copper paste to the steering centre.

THE CRACKING CLASSICS

Most noises occur at these points.

Bottom bracket

Very high forces act on the bottom bracket. This is why bearing shells or cranks loosen more quickly than other screw connections. Lubricate the threads of the bearing shells generously with copper paste. For square and Octalink bearings, also coat the area under the loose shell. Apply a thin layer of grease to the crank mount.

Saddle

There is no easier place to eliminate noise pollution than the saddle. Grease the seat post generously. This also applies to the clamping bolts. Grease not only the thread, but also the bolt head. If the saddle cover creaks, a splash of silicone spray on the saddle rails will help.
