Diet: How to make your trail bike lighter!
Fat pig: Trail bikes are fun because they are light, trendy and blessed with a lot of propulsion. The only problem is that more and more trail bikes are overweight. We have the solution!

With this trail bike tuning, we tuned a Spcialized Stumpjumper Comp from 14 kilos to 12.6 kilos (budget: 818 euros | weight: -1404 grams):

1st wheelset 1488 g / 698 Euro

The lightweight Newmen Evolution-X.A.-25 wheels with aluminium rims (rim width: 25 mm) proved to be very dent-resistant in the last wheel test. Even carbon wheels have a hard time keeping up with their weight. The Newmen wheels save 713 grams compared to the standard Roval Traverse wheels.

2nd tyre 795 g / 758 g / 100 Euro

When new, the Specialized rolls on its own 2.6-inch tyres. The 29-inch tyres weigh a hefty 987/947 grams. For a tyre of this width, the Butcher/Purgatory combination rolls surprisingly well, but has little grip. The Schwalbe Fat Albert Front and Nobby Nic tyres in 2.35 inches save 381 grams, roll fast and can even go one better in terms of grip.

3rd tubeless conversion / approx. 20 Euro

The conversion doesn't cost much and is quick, as most tyres are now tubeless-compatible. In addition, many rims are already supplied with the appropriate rim tape. The puncture protection increases and the wheel weight decreases. In this case, the tuning was particularly productive: with 250 grams per tube, we were able to save a whole 370 grams.

Ride review of the Specialized Stumpjumper Comp by Peter Nilges (FREERIDE tester)

From a raccoon belly to a toned six-pack: with 1.4 kilos less on the ribs, the before and after comparison of the Specialized Stumpjumper is very clear. And that with a budget of around 800 euros. The first few metres off-road make it clear that the radical diet is not only reflected on the scales. The trail bike is almost unrecognisable when setting off, and it accelerates with confidence. 1400 grams less on the wheels and tyres is a real statement. Despite the slightly narrower tyres we chose, you don't have to make any compromises off-road. With slightly higher air pressure (+ 0.2 bar), you can easily compensate for the theoretically lower puncture protection of the smaller tyre volume (2.35 instead of 2.6 inches).

We say: Mission accomplished!
