Dr Asker Jeukendrup from the University of Birmingham has shown in a study (published in 2008 in the journal "Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise" of the American College of Sports Medicine) that the body can absorb up to 50 per cent more carbohydrates when glucose and fructose are consumed in combination. The body converts a maximum of 60 grams of glucose per hour. If the simple sugar is present in a ratio of 2:1 with fructose, it is up to 90 grams. This improves endurance performance by up to eight per cent.
