Fruit bars are considered a tasty alternative to gels and artificial bars. But do they give bikers enough energy? Five fruit bars in a short test.

"Fruit bars contain carbohydrates almost exclusively in the form of sugar. This is often criticised. But that's not such a bad thing on the bike. Bikers need a quick source of energy." This is what nutrition expert Dr Claudia Osterkamp-Baerens says.

We took a closer look at these five fruit bars:

Active3 Cranberry

1.65 Euro / 40 g >> e.g. available at Amazon

4,13 Euro / 100 gram

134 kcal / 335 kcal

Specially developed bar for endurance athletes, does not become too tough even in the cold. Good: Also contains slowly available carbohydrate sources from amaranth and linseed for a proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. So the effect lasts even over longer distances.

Raw Bite Coconut

1,99 Euro / 50 g >> e.g. available at Amazon

3,98 Euro / 100 gram

227 kcal / 453 kcal

Tasty bar, pleasant to bite, slightly melting chewing sensation, which is probably due to the high proportion of nuts and coconut flakes. Top in terms of fat and calorie content, which is not bad as long as enough energy is consumed on tour.

3,75 Euro / 100 gram

Fruity bar, half made from apples or ingredients derived from apples. The flavour is rounded off with cinnamon, sultanas and almonds. Magnesium is added to promote muscle metabolism. Opinions differed somewhat in the taste test.

Rapunzel Mango-Baobab

approx. 0,99 Euro / 40 g >> e.g. at DocMorris available

2,48 Euro / 100 gram

124 kcal / 315 kcal

Sweet and plummy tasting bar with a small amount of exotic baobab, the fruit of the baobab tree. This provides useful potassium and vitamin C for muscles and nerves. The sour flavour, which can be refreshing, especially in summer, did not appeal to everyone.

Aldi cranberry-cherry

0,20 Euro / 30 g

0.66 Euro / 100 gram

97 kcal / 322 kcal

Very reasonably priced (only in packs of five). Some testers found it a little too sweet and mushy. Medium sugar content, also some longer-chain carbohydrates from cornflakes and oat flakes. Critical: with palm fat. Flavourings and citric acid are also added.
