Start the day on a healthy note: ginger and turmeric porridge for breakfast.
Many people always have the same thing for breakfast – but why not try something new for a change? Here’s how to make ginger and turmeric porridge – in just 15 minutes.

Fancy a power start to the day? Then this golden-yellow porridge is just the thing for you! The combination of turmeric and ginger not only adds a splash of colour to your bowl, but also a lovely warming touch that really wakes you up from the inside out.

What makes this breakfast special is that the spices are first briefly toasted in coconut oil – this allows them to release their full flavour and also helps your body absorb them more effectively. Add to that creamy porridge, gently simmering in your favourite plant-based drink until it’s nice and creamy.

The whole thing is topped off with a colourful mix of blueberries, juicy orange segments and toasted nuts. The flaxseeds provide extra omega-3 fatty acids, and the fresh mint adds the perfect finishing touch. In just 15 minutes, you’ll have a breakfast on the table that not only tastes fantastic but also keeps you feeling full and focused for hours. Brain food at its best!

The ingredients

  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 1–2 tsp ground turmeric
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • 120 g wholemeal oat flakes (small-leaf)
  • 700 ml plant-based milk (unsweetened, e.g. coconut, rice, almond or soya milk)
  • 300 g blueberries (blueberries, blackberries)
  • 2 organic oranges
  • 60 g mixed nuts (e.g. hazelnuts, cashews, pecans)
  • 2 tbsp flaxseed
  • Mint for garnishing

Preparation

1 Gently heat the coconut oil, add the spices, stir and fry briefly. Add the oats and the drink, bring to the boil, then leave to soak for 3–4 minutes over a low heat.

2 Wash the berries. Wash one orange under hot water, pat dry, grate a little zest and mix into the porridge. Peel both oranges and segment them. Toast the nuts in a frying pan, then chop them roughly.

Spoon the porridge into bowls, top with berries, orange segments, nuts and flaxseeds, and garnish with fresh mint to taste

Trivia

Overall, savoury breakfasts are the most popular in Germany, at 34 per cent, followed by sweet breakfasts at 18 per cent (rolls/croissants with jam, etc.) and mixed breakfasts at 15 per cent (bread, muesli, eggs, fruit, etc.). Only then do muesli fans (10 per cent), egg fans (6 per cent) and fruit eaters (5 per cent) follow – according to a 2023 survey.
