If the dog is healthy and fully grown, its owner can generally take it on bike rides together. "A visit to the vet will clarify in advance whether the animal is in the right condition and has the right physique," advises Göttingen dog trainer Andrea Hartmann. The vet will examine the animal's joints and check the function of its heart and lungs. If everything is in order, he will give the green light.
Are all breeds suitable for bike rides? "Small, short-legged dogs should not run alongside the bike," warns the expert. They can come along in a dog basket that can be locked at the top or in a trailer. The following applies to medium-sized to large dogs: breeds with a streamlined body shape are usually keen runners, while dogs with a stocky build prefer to take things slowly. But there are exceptions. The greyhound is not suitable for bike rides, even though it loves to run. "Greyhounds are sight hunters who may sprint off when they see movement," warns the dog trainer. This genetically determined behaviour can be dangerous on bike rides.
It is best for the dog to set the pace when travelling, as its running ability depends not only on its physique, age and level of training, but also to a large extent on its form on the day. "Dogs should accompany the bike at a maximum trotting speed," advises Andrea Hartmann. Short sprints are allowed as long as the animal enjoys them. If the surroundings allow it, the dog should be kept on a lead. Speaking of the lead: "Please never keep your dog on a collar, but always on a well-fitting chest harness on the bike," says the trainer. Also important: always have water with you for your dog.
