INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
"People who are intrinsically motivated like to get on their bikes because they enjoy the exercise," explains Alexandra Albert. Exercise is accompanied by positive emotions such as pleasure, fun or enjoyment. Intrinsically motivated people are already rewarded during the training session because their brain releases dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. Extrinsic sources of motivation such as competition or weight loss are not absolutely necessary for this type. For mixed types, however, they can additionally increase motivation.
SOCIAL MOTIVATION
With this form of motivation, the aspect of social togetherness predominates. "People with social motivation find it easier to achieve a goal if they can pursue it as part of a group," says Alexandra Albert. If you are socially motivated, it is best to arrange to meet up with others - whether for training, a group outing or a bike commute. The coronavirus pandemic makes this difficult, of course. You have to get creative: Why not simply call your training partner from your home trainer?
PERFORMANCE MOTIVATION
Do you feel particularly motivated when you can compete with a friend or colleague in training or a competition? Do you like to compare how the number of kilometres you have commuted has changed compared to the previous year? The performance-orientated motive probably predominates for you. "These people enjoy exertion and sporting challenges and strive for a sense of achievement in the form of top sporting performances, says Alexandra Albert. You will experience an increase in motivation if you set yourself goals and intermediate targets - such as taking part in a cycling marathon.
POWER MOTIVATION
Whether it's instructing beginners or taking on responsibility in a sports club: Exercising power can also be motivating. "Many people have a negative image of power," says Alexandra Albert, "but we also need people in sport who take responsibility. In addition, exercising power over one's own body can also play a motivating role for this type of person.
