Question from reader Michael H.: Do you already have experience with 29er bikes and roller trainers such as the Tacx Flow? These products all use quick releases. Do the bikes fit into these systems, even if the bikes have thru axles?
Expert advice: We have tried various castors with 29er wheels - it doesn't work, the wheels don't fit into the frame due to their dimensions. The only exception that makes little sense is a free wheel. The same problem exists with thru-axles: they cannot be fixed in the suspension, two abutments are required, which only a classic quick-release offers. Even with lightweight quick-releases (e.g. Tune) there are problems with clamping.
Our tip: Why not build yourself a 26" wheel with a special tyre, quick release and road bike cassette, which will also fit into the 29er?
