Reader question: Numb toes
Hello BIKE team, I am new to cycling. After about three quarters of an hour on tour, I get a numb feeling in the toes of my feet (I ride with cycling clothing and cycling shoes), i.e. circulatory problems. Could this be due to the saddle? Marc Scherer, Alsfeld-Altenburg, by e-mail

Many bikers suffer from numbness in their toes, a problem that is not easy to solve. The nerve tracts run from the toes through the whole body, through the spine to the head. On this long journey, the nerves have to pass through a number of constricted areas:
Spine, sitting bones, knees, ankles, toe joints. There are therefore many possible solutions, so you need to feel your way around and ideally only change one parameter at a time before each ride. The width of the saddle can influence your problems. Have a suitable saddle measured for you (by your SQ-Lab dealer), choose a rather narrow saddle (note: a saddle that is too narrow causes numbness in other areas, which is much more serious than numbness in the toes)!
The geometry of the bike, especially the saddle height and offset, play a role. The shoes may be too tight or laced too tightly, an insole with a pad (slight elevation in the forefoot area) or with a slight step usually brings the greatest success. Tension and any previous damage to the spine should be taken into account.
