Germany's fastest downhiller Nina Hoffmann has fought her way to the top of the world rankings. In our three-part series, she reveals the training she used to achieve this.

Gone are the wild bad guy days: If you want to be at the front in downhill racing, you have to be in top shape. Nobody knows this better than Nina Hoffmann. The Thuringian has made it to World Cup victory in just five years. In the next three issues of BIKE, she will tell us about the training programme she used to achieve this - despite coronavirus. Nina's training programme to follow starts in BIKE 2/21 with the basic training and continues with two more parts until issue 4/21.

Fitness series with Nina Hoffmann - the 3 parts

Part 1: Basic endurance

In the off-season, Nina is working on her basic endurance in order to have a solid foundation for the coming season. In the first part, Nina shows which alternative sports are particularly fun.

Part 2: Strength training

Nina Hoffmann owes her meteoric rise in downhill sport to her upper body strength. However, gyms and training centres are currently closed to amateur athletes. In part 2 of our fitness series, she reveals the best exercises to do at home.

Part 3: mental training

Fitness and riding technique are the foundation of biking. If you want more, you need mental strength. Downhill ace Nina Hoffmann explains how you can train yourself to be courageous. In the third part of the fitness series, she reveals, among other things, how to tackle key sections with courage and control.

The former track and field athlete and javelin thrower has been competing in the licence class in downhill races since 2016 and competed in her first World Cups in 2018. In the same year, the psychology student won her first German championship title. In 2019, the Thuringian finished the overall World Cup in 4th place. Gitta Beimfohr joined the BIKE travel resort during her tourism studies when the Strada delle 52 Gallerie on the Pasubio was closed to mountain bikers. Since Gitta crossed the Alps twice at racing speed, she has favoured multi-day tours - by MTB in the Alps or by gravel bike through the German low mountain ranges.
