Who builds the best e-trail bike? Ghost or Specialized?
In 2018, Ghost impressed us with the Hybride SL AMR X, which received the best eMTB rating of the year. In 2019, Specialized sent the new Levo into the race. A top-class duel.

This trail truly deserves its name. Right, left, right, wave, wave. Then down into the dip and withstand the compression. Aim for the line, leave the brakes open. Holger Meyer spits it into the air as if through a cannon barrel. "This is real mountain biking," grins the bike veteran at the end of the Rollercoaster, probably the best-known and most popular trail in Finale Ligure. We applaud and agree: these two bikes deserve their place in the duel for the best trail bike of the year at least as much as the trail deserves its promising name. Not a trace of sluggishness, real mountain bike feeling, pure fun.

E-drive: Shimano with external battery vs. Brose with integrated battery

Both rivals rely on a carbon main frame with aluminium rear triangle and can therefore keep the weight pleasantly low. Both weigh just over 21 kilos, the Levo even comes with a large 700 watt-hour battery. These are not absolute records, but with full and robust trail equipment, they are a real statement. Especially in times when the competition is often lurching towards the 25-kilo mark. Ghost achieves part of the weight saving by using a classic, external Shimano battery, while Specialized achieves it through elaborate and well thought-out battery integration, in which the energy carrier is pushed into the down tube from below.

Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
