The stoic in the test field. The bulky, angular frame and the total weight of 14.8 kilos do not bode well for the climb...

But once the 29er wheels have started to move, the ride is surprisingly fast and very good-natured. Nevertheless, it is good that you can fall back on a second chainring for longer climbs. The geometry is successful, the riding position is sporty and central. Downhill, the rear suspension responds sensitively and absorbs even big hits. The fork with less travel and progression can't quite keep up. We didn't like the kink in the seat tube, which meant that the seatpost couldn't be lowered far enough for a 1.72 metre tall rider.

Conclusion: Good-natured trail bike for downhill orientated riders. Definitely too heavy for long tours with a lot of vertical metres.

AlternativeThe Fuel EX 9.8 rolls more easily through the terrain with its carbon frame and XR equipment. Price: 4999 euros.

Characteristics: The sensitive rear end of the Trek Fuel EX 8 offers noticeably more travel than the fork. A 140 mm fork would be more harmonious.Photo: BIKE Magazin Characteristics: The sensitive rear end of the Trek Fuel EX 8 offers noticeably more travel than the fork.
