The Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Alloy comes with a potent chassis. It's fun on fast descents, but you have to work a bit harder on the climbs.

On our test track, the Specialized makes no secret of its preferences: It wants to go downhill, and fast. Even in size S3, which is roughly equivalent to an M, the
Stumpjumper is smooth and literally soaks up rough terrain with its plush suspension - and the bike remains surprisingly quiet. Handling with a lot of pressure on the front wheel is direct and intuitive, while the coarse-tread tyres offer excellent grip. The Stumpi easily goes into flight mode thanks to its good pop. The rider only has to work hard to negotiate tight bends. This is due to the combination of 445 millimetre chainstays and the 65 degree steering angle. With the flip chip in the high position, however, the Stumpjumper could still be made a little more manoeuvrable - victory on points in the downhill classification.

Specialised Stumpjumper Comp Alloy: One of the best climbers

We were pleasantly surprised when we turned onto the climb: together with Canyon and Rocky Mountain, the Specialized is one of the best climbers, with only the high weight slowing it down. The seat is compact but comfortable. Again, there's a lot of pressure on the handlebars, which keeps the front wheel glued to the ground even on steep climbs. The rear suspension is almost free of drive influences - no annoying pitching, but plenty of traction and the finest response.

And is there anything to complain about? Unfortunately, yes. As is typical for Specialized, the bike is rather meagrely equipped. The associated high weight puts a damper on climbing ambitions. Sram's NX groupset shifts sluggishly and reacts slowly to shifting commands. The 11-50 cassette also only offers 454 per cent gear range - too little for long trail tours. Despite four pistons at the front and rear and a 200 mm disc at the front, the inexpensive Sram G2-R stoppers only slow down moderately. And yet: Overall, the Specialized is one of the most coherent bikes in this comparison.

Conclusion on the Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Alloy by Stefan Frey, BIKE editor

If you want to work your way up the climbs to have maximum fun on the descents, the Specialized is the bike for you. Powerful suspension, convincing handling, but unfortunately sparsely equipped.
