Unsurprisingly, the freshly revised Canyon Neuron scores the most points in the componentry category. The Koblenz-based company relies on carbon fibre for the chassis and wheels. The suspension comes from Fox's premium Factory series. The 2023 Neuron CF 9 also specifies an electronic drivetrain.
This is how well equipped the Canyon Neuron - together with the Norco - Although the most expensive bike in this trail bike comparison, it is also the most up-to-date and the only one with electronic shifting. In practice, the Neuron shines in this configuration with an extremely balanced character. As is typical for Canyon, the rear suspension remains remarkably composed even when pedalling, but still responds well and generates a lot of traction.
The combination of a high front end, moderate reach and steep seat angle places the rider comfortably on the bike. Not too long, but not too short either - this makes long days in the saddle easier. Lightweight wheels, Schwalbe tyres with a fast Speedgrip rubber compound and a reasonable total weight of 12.9 kilos increase the range and provide riding fun on undulating trails - just as a trail bike should.
With the small 30 mm chainring, you can climb long climbs with ease. Despite its moderate geometry, the Neuron with its high front end and harmonious suspension still provides sufficient riding confidence on downhill sections. On the one hand, direction changes are precise with the 66-degree steering angle. At the same time, the long chainstays give the bike a pleasantly smooth ride.
The only point of criticism: although the Schwalbe tyres impress with their rolling characteristics, we would have liked a little more grip and better puncture protection for more demanding terrain.
The Canyon Neuron with 140 millimetres of travel received a subtle geometry update in 2023. Nevertheless, the new Neuron sticks to its old values. Free of extremes, it climbs confidently, descends solidly and offers the best overall package. - Florentin Vesenbeckh, test editor
