The Canyon Neuron 7 is a price banger with functional features. What's more, fun uphill and downhill is guaranteed. Does that make it the perfect trail bike?

Already in the last Trail bike test in BIKE 7/23 Canyon dusted off the test victory with the new Neuron - back then in the 5000 euro carbon version. With the aluminium model for just 2700 euros, the mail-order company once again takes the cake: the Koblenz-based company provides a complete XT drivetrain without blender parts. The SLX stoppers with 180 mm discs are among the best in this comparison. On top of that, there are system wheels from DT Swiss, a Tele dropper post with plenty of travel and Fox Performance suspension. Srams UDH derailleur hanger and a threaded bottom bracket
make maintenance easier.

The Canyon Neuron 7 in practice

From the very first pedal stroke, you feel comfortable and balanced on the bike. With the easy-rolling Schwalbe tyres and the drive-neutral rear triangle, you can climb even long climbs in a relaxed manner. There's no need to reach for the platform as the shock remains stable in its travel. Nevertheless, the suspension absorbs even small bumps sensitively, which secures the Canyon the Uphill rating.

Off into the descent. The low dropper seatpost and high front end give the rider plenty of room to manoeuvre and safety. The Canyon masters steep sections with ease and is easy to guide through winding trails. Even when things get rough on the trail, the Neuron doesn't let you panic: The plush suspension willingly releases suspension travel, but always offers sufficient support. This allows the bike to be steered precisely through the terrain. Thanks to the powerful SLX brakes, you always stay in control. The combination of Nobby Nic at the front and Wicked Will at the rear is a good choice for long climbs, but could do with more grip and puncture protection. When you get to the bottom, you want to pedal straight back up again. So the perfect trail bike? At least close to it.

Conclusion on the Canyon Neuron 7 by Max Fuchs, BIKE editor:

If you want to have fun mountain biking, you need nothing more than the Neuron. The equipment is absolutely functional, and the suspension is a complete success both uphill and downhill. What's more, the Canyon is an absolute bargain.
