The perfect children's bike

The children's full-suspension bikes in our test cost at least 1800 euros. But a good children's bike is definitely worth the money. We explain in our Focus on "Kids & Bikes" in BIKE 4/2021which points you should pay particular attention to when buying.

  1. Hardtail or Fully? Is your offspring mainly on easy trails or still at the beginning of their biking career? Then a hardtail trains riding technique and line choice. However, with increasing ability, on technical trails with jumps or drops, there is no way around a fully. There are a few important points to bear in mind. We tell you which ones.
  2. Size and geometryBecause the ratio of stride length to torso hardly varies in children, height is the most important factor when choosing a size. You can find out what you need to consider and which wheel size is the right one for you in BIKE 4/2021.
  3. WeightWould you want to pedal a 30-kilo bike uphill? Certainly not. So the fun factor correlates directly with the weight of the bike. The simple rule here is: as light as possible.
  4. The equipmentYes, V-brakes are light and easy to maintain. However, hydraulic disc brakes have a clear advantage in demanding terrain. However, it must be possible to adjust the levers to the small hands of children. The drive should be as simple as possible. You can find out which details are important for children's bike equipment in our Focus on "Kids & Bikes".
  5. Crank length and Q-factorThe crank length is still often neglected. Yet it is a decisive factor for an ergonomic movement sequence. If the cranks are too far apart (Q factor), the legs are forced into an X position when pedalling. This can cause knee pain. What are good dimensions for children's bikes? In BIKE 4/2021 you will find the answers.
